Costa Mujeres vs Playa Mujeres – What is the difference?

If you have been researching your next vacation and specifically looking at the area just North of Cancun. You are probably asking yourself “What is the difference between Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres?”

Effectively both of the areas are in the same place. They are located just North of the main town of Cancun. Situated on a peninsula that juts out from the mainland. The resorts in this area are super spacious and are mostly gated complexes.

It is a perfect location if you are looking for more of a secluded chilled-back resort. That is a little bit away from the main party area, but close enough that if you fancy a night on the dancefloor it’s just a taxi ride away.

What makes it very confusing with the Playa Mujeres vs Costa Mujeres question. Is that there are resorts at the start of the peninsula that is named Costa Mujeres, resorts in the middle named Playa Mujeres and at the end name Costa Mujeres.  So, there’s no rhyme or reason for the naming.

Why Stay in Playa/Costa Mujeres?

As we mentioned this area of Cancun is really spacious and has a level of privacy that is unique for resorts. This privacy element is twofold, firstly based on the size of the resorts in this area means that guests can be spaced out and the suites are generally not overlooked. The other element is that most of the resorts in this area are located within gated communities.

The beach at Playa/Costa Mujeres is the best on offer around the wider Cancun area. The beach at the main hotel zone isn’t the best. There is a lack of privacy and the beach itself isn’t as large as what is on offer in Playa/Costa Mujeres.

Playa/Costa Mujeres is one of our favoruite areas for family resorts. It’s far enough away from the party area that you normally get more of a mature demographic at these resorts.

Drawbacks of Playa/Costa Mujeres

There are a few drawbacks to the area, the first one being that it is not within walking distance of the main hotel zone of Cancun. You will need to get a taxi if you fancy taking in the sights.

Although resorts in this area are really spacious and have a high volume of facilities and restaurants on offer. You don’t have the ability to really walk anywhere near. If you are staying in the main hotel zone, you can stay in resorts where you can walk to local restaurants and bars.
