Playa Mujeres is a great area. Beautiful stretches of beach, spacious resorts, a great golf course, and within a gated community.
It’s the premier vacation destination in this part of Mexico. Just a 20-minute drive from Cancun international airport and a short drive from the town of Cancun. The area is a nice mix of being close to the action of Cancun while being secluded enough that you are away from the party atmosphere if you want to be.
One of the other main benefits of choosing resorts in the Playa Mujeres area is that the resorts here are a lot bigger than the resorts you get in the main hotel zone of Cancun. With that, you get a lot more amenities on offer as the resorts are more expansive. The beach at Playa Mujeres is also significantly better. It is protected by Isla Mujeres, so the water is very swimmable and there are very private beaches with no footfall between resorts.
Best Adults-only Resorts in Playa Mujeres
- Beloved Playa Mujeres

This is our out-and-out best resort in Playa Mujeres and if you’re looking for a luxury adults-only experience then you need to look no further than the Beloved Playa Mujeres. This resort is significantly smaller than all of the other resorts featured in this list with just 107 rooms available. There are some serious boutique vibes from this resort and the service definitely feels a lot more personal than the other resorts on this list.
The beach at Playa Mujeres is probably the best in the Cancun and surrounding area, so all of the resorts in the area avail of it, but the beach area at the Beloved is the best. There is a vibe of luxury with a great beachside service and Bali beds to really get you in a relaxed mood.
The food offered here is nice, but a little limited. There are four restaurants to choose from, which isn’t actually too bad considering there are only 107 rooms in the resort. The quality of food was very good and our favorite spot was definitely Le Bisou, which is a French restaurant that perfectly executes the classic French dishes.
The element that makes this a standout resort though is really the level of service. The Beloved seems to have a high ratio of staff members to guests and because there are only a hundred-odd people on the resort you really get to know the staff, which is a great personal touch.
- Excellence Playa Mujeres

Another 5-star adults-only resort by the Excellence group, they are definitely the leading chain in the area and potentially the Caribbean. The Excellence is an adults-only offering and is their largest offering in the area. There are 450 rooms in this resort, so if you’re looking for a more personal experience then we suggest checking out their Beloved Playa Mujeres resort. You do pay a premium for the exclusivity though.
The Excellence is a great resort and is a solid option for an adults-only experience. It’s comparably priced to Dreams and Secrets in the area, but the experience you get for the price point is considerably better. There is a wide selection of restaurant options and the food quality is really good. The sushi spot here is legitimately one of the best we’ve experienced outside of Japan.
Another element that separates the Excellence resorts from the pack. Is there a stellar drink offering? They carry a huge range of international and premium brands in all of the bars. If you stay in the Excellence club you will have access to an even more elevated selection of alcohol. The likes of Grey Goose, Clase Azul, Johnny Walker Black, and Don Julio 1942 are available in the Excellence club area.
From a value perspective, the Excellence packs the greatest punch for the quality of experience that you get. The Excellence is on average 20-25% cheaper than the Beloved resort and while it is not on the same level from an experience standpoint, it is very close.
- TRS Coral Hotel
Also located in Costa Mujeres, The TRS Coral hotel is also part of the Palladium group that owns the Grand Palladium in the area. Both resorts are actually connected to each other and share the same stretch of beach. This resort has a super modern aesthetic to it and was only opened in 2018. This is also an adults-only resort, right next door to it is the Grand Palladium hotel which is a family-friendly resort.
There are 469 rooms in this resort, so it’s definitely on the bigger side, but given the quality of the service and the overall size of the resort. It doesn’t feel like an impersonal stay. There is a great choice of restaurants with 12 on offer and the quality and consistency of the food were very good.
The resort is on the larger side with a really big footprint. So, there is a golf cart shuttle service that runs throughout the grounds. When we heard this first we were a little put off. These services tend to be inconsistent, but at the TRS Coral they have the schedule down to a tee and you’re never waiting too long for a lift.
The TRS Coral does the little things really well, from having wine coolers in the rooms, so you can bring your own bottles. To have a wristband as your key, the small elements really help to make this resort a solid choice for an adults-only offering. Random fact, they filled parts of season 2 of Netflix’s Love is Blind at the TRS Coral.
- Secrets Playa Mujeres
The aesthetic of this resort is really nice. It’s got a Mexican hacienda-type vibe to it and once you walk through the front door you get the feeling that you’re on vacation. It’s a 5-star adults-only resort that is one of the better resorts in the area. Although all of the resorts in Playa Mujeres are very well spaced out, the Secrets, in particular, is very spacious and has really great amenities. The pool areas at the Secrets are probably the best of any resort in Playa Mujeres.
The food available at the Secrets is pretty good and consistent. The main disappointing thing is that there seems to be a large number of restaurants that are closed each night. This meant that your options were limited each night. As reservations are required it meant that there were sometimes queues for the more popular spots.
WIth 424 rooms the resort is on the larger side, but we were surprised when we visited what a personal experience it ended up being.
- Atelier Playa Mujeres

The Atelier is a boutique-style resort that feels a little bit more luxurious and exclusive than most of the other resorts in Playa Mujeres. This is a large resort in terms of its capacity with 430 rooms, but the resort is pretty spread out and the amenities are in abundance. The resort and service do match its boutique aesthetic and we were really impressed with the staff’s attention to detail when we visited.
One of the nicest things about the Atelier is the infinity pool and the El Cielo Sky bar, which is located on the top floor of the resort. This chic bar and infinity pool have stunning views over the resort and the golf course to the right. It’s such a nice place to grab a drink or to chill out for the day.
This resort probably has the largest restaurant offering we have ever experienced for a resort of this side. There are 26 spots to choose from across the Atelier and family-friendly resort the Estudio. Now not all of the restaurants are open all of the time, but there is a decent amount to choose from each night. There won’t be any queuing needed at this resort, which we love to see.
One of the main drawbacks to this resort is that there is no food service by the beach, so it does take away from the luxury feel of the resort. There is drinks service though and there are a number of food options a stone’s throw away from the beach, so we’re splitting hairs here.
Overall, the Atelier Playa Mujeres is a really strong option. It definitely has the nicest decor and vibe of all of the resorts in the area. The El Cielo Sky Bar is one of the nicest rooftop bars we have ever been to.
